I don't know why, but I take a perverse pleasure in taking cheesy personality tests. So when I saw an inkblot test on Tickle, I was way more thrilled than a normal person would be. I had a burning desire to know what drove my unconscious mind. So I answered ridiculous questions about what emotions I thought the blots expressed and what they looked like, and the computer told me, "Liza, your subconscious mind is driven most by Love."
.....Huh?
"You have an energy about you that inspires people to experience their true feelings of love and act kindly towards others. In this way, you and your drive for loving relationships start a chain reaction of positive experiences."
Yeah. Riiiiight.
"Your relationships are complex things. One important aspect affecting all of them is the role that you play when interacting with others. Do you typically take an active approach when dealing with the people around you, or do you tend to behave more passively? According to your test responses, you appear to have a balanced approach to interacting. You're not consistently the one who is active or passive. This mixed pattern indicates that, relative to other people, you try to either be sensitive to the needs of a particular situation or the people with whom you're dealing. By being able to adjust your approach depending on how the others are behaving, you can handle most situations with ease. Your friends may see you as a great listener or a savvy communicator because of your gift for reading people."
This is a nice way of saying "You can't make up your mind, and you confused us."
But looking at inkblots is fun.

The Falls. The Flatulence. Part troix.
On Tuesday, Jim and Brittany got married in front of Looking Glass Falls, which is also in Pisgah National Forest. The falls are beautiful. They have these steps that let you go right to the bottom, and I just stood down there for a while and squealed like a little kid in a candy store. The wedding itself was beautiful too. I've been to all kinds of weddings, but this one was the best of all. Brittany wore this simple but then not simple white dress (it was very boho chic), and Jim had on jeans, although he did have on a dress coat. The rest of us were wearing jeans and huddling together like Eskimos. Garrett did the honors, and Lou and Matt Callis played. I was thinking, "This is like the definition of a Shack wedding." Everybody was crying and stuff...aww...
Now, then, the reception. Oh, the reception. This restaurant called Hobknob in Brevard catered, and they did an excellent job. I couldn't eat much because I'm not used to such rich food, but it was really good. We cleaned out the tables before we left, and we were eating off that food until we left. Unfortunately, said food contained an obscene amount of feta cheese, spinach, and other gas-inducing food. You can imagine what happened next. Let's just say there was a lot of laughter. And wishes for air freshener.
After that, we went shopping in Brevard. I spent most of my time in a thrift store that was also the Humane Society. That was...interesting. There was this one cat who was evil. I'm serious. It was big and black, and when it wasn't pointedly ignoring you, it was rolling its eyes at you. So I cooed to it, "You're an evil kitty, aren't you? Yes, you're the spawn of the Devil!"
The cat glared at me. I swear.
We also went by Brevard Music Center. Lou was our tour guide and shared fond memories of her camp days with us. It was huge and scenic, and we all felt inadequate afterwards.
We also hung out at this coffee shop called Essence of Thyme. Brittany Jo read Clifford's Family out loud to us, so the waiter recommended another children's book to us. It was Old Turtle, the book Garrett had preached a sermon on a few months ago. How's that for coincidence?
That night, we had mini-Family Reunion. Garrett read Scripture, a song played, and we shared stories about the trip so far. What surprised me was the number of people who were hurting. I hadn't even noticed. Lou broke down in tears, she was so upset, and I hadn't even noticed. That was jarring. I think I need to pay more attention to people's feelings now. I've had to turn off my emotions for so long, they're a little rusty.
When Family Reunion was over, Lou came back to the apartment and pretty much collapsed on her bed and bawled some more. Cindy and Christina came up and wallowed in sorrow with her. Meanwhile, I sat on my bed across from them, completely numb. My mind was a blank. I had no idea what to say, but I hated to see Lou like that. I was too scared to cry much. I went downstairs, sat at the table, paced, and came back up, all the while mentally kicking myself for my sudden mental and emotional freeze. Finally I decided to go downstairs since I wasn't doing any good, but they insisted I join them on the bed, so I did. I still didn't have much to say, so I listened mostly. And somehow I think Lou understood that I did care and I was sorry, even though I couldn't show it much.
Lou and I talked some more that night about various things. Somehow the conversation turned to criteria for boyfriends. I felt like a heathen because Lou was coming up with stuff like praying all night and having Communion together and I was like, "Well, first of all, he can't be ugly. Let's face it, I'm a shallow girl." Now, Lou had some shallow criteria too (like taking her horseback riding), but I won the shallow award for that particular exchange. Lou really got a kick out of my "no playas" criterion. "I can smell a playa a mile away," I declared. There are few things I truly despise in this world, but saccharine, honey-spewing males are way up there on my list. That night, I went to bed still a little worried for Lou, but I was glad that I could be there for my friend.
Ah, yes! How could I forget? We also had a toga party that night. With clothes though, so it'd be "God-friendly", as Brittany Jo so aptly put it. It was basically a bunch of crazy people in sheets dancing to techno music, but it was so funny. And embarrassing. I'm ashamed that there's documentation that I was there. Yeah, that's one of those pictures you see that pops up randomly on Shack announcements before Reunion...

Cappucino is my crunk juice.
After considering how much money I spend getting much-needed coffee from various coffeehouses in walking distance of campus (mostly on Wednesdays), I decided to mooch off my mommy and beg her to get me some instant cappucino. It's not quite as good, but it does the trick. I think I put too much in my cup this morning, though, because I was nuts today. I didn't even care that it smells like poo outside since the farmers up the road are spreading manure on their fields...
Yup, there's nothing like the country.
I tormented my sister via phone for pledging a "literary society" at Erskine (which is just their pretty version of sororities), and she got mad at me. I had to say a lot of "I wuv uuuuuu"'s to fix it, but I don't think it worked completely. I'm an expert at accidentally hurting Jennifer's feelings- and on purpose too, if I must be honest. You'd think after living with me for 18 years, she'd figure out that I only tease people I'm really comfortable with. But then, by the same token, I should've figured out by now that she often doesn't realize that I'm just joking with her and stopped teasing her...sigh. Seriously, though, I'm glad she's getting involved with something new. I trust her judgement.
Also, my alma mater (Lee Central High School) won the state AA championships in girls' basketball this afternoon. Woot! This will be their fourth title in the school's five-year history, so I'm very happy for them. I saw the center on TV, and I was like, "I know her! She was in my class!!!" So yeah. Today was good.
And that instant cappucino can has been tempting me all day.

Where does all this snot come from...?
Because the heat's busted in here (again, but it's better than the water pipes busting) and thanks to the sudden cold spell, my sinuses have gone on strike. I have chronic sinus problems, so if I'm not careful, they could easily become infected and I'll end up with sinusitis or bronchitis. I do not want to be on antibiotics this year, so if you see me wrapped up like an Eskimo this week, that's why. Meanwhile, I'm sneezing all the time, and snot is coming out of me in buckets. My only solace is I get to blow my nose in pretty pink tissues. That and I'm only slightly stuffy, so my voice isn't very shot. I get depressed when I get sick and I can't sing. Otherwise, I'm perfectly fine. My throat is just a little tickly. I doubt it'll get any worse than this.
I'd write something interesting, but it's Wednesday night. Astronomy lab night. The night I have class pretty much from 5:30 to 9:30. The fact that I can write in coherent sentences right now is a miracle in itself. Thank goodness Spring Break is just a few days away... I'm so happy...*cries pitiful tears of joy and starts snotting twice as much*

Geez...
You're not going to believe this, but now my neck is acting up. However, this is normal. I was in a school bus accident two years ago, and my neck acts up every now and then because of it. It doesn't really hurt, it's just somewhat stiff, which is just annoying. Maybe I'm unconsciously trying to feel Lou's pain from last week. Either that or this is payback for me telling Matt Callis he's old all the time. But he is old...he pays people to starch his shirts, for goodness' sake. I thought you were cool, man... Or maybe David is right. GASP! I REALLY AM AN OLD MAN!!! WAAAAHHHH!!!! CURSE THOSE BLUEBERRY MUFFINS!!!!
But anyway. Today was nice. I got the itinerary today, and I know almost everybody going on Shack on the Rox, so it's definitely going to be a sweet time. And I got full credit on my book report in Afro-American Studies, so yay, small victory dance. woot woot! I checked my campus mailbox for the first time in a month, and I had a bunch of junk and 5 credit card offers. To which I retorted, "I will never be dragged into your cesspool of debt, foul plastic!!!"
Man, I am abusing the exclamation points tonight. But I had orange soda. Me likeys orange soda muchy. See, this is why I rarely drink coffee. If this is how I act with soda, imagine me with coffee pumping through my veins...Not pretty. You know, that's probably why most of the Shackers are crazy...coffee is almost synonymous with the Shack. Along with American Eagle and iPods, but that's another story.

Life is beautiful
Today is my favorite day of the week. I'm serious! Sundays so rock. And today was...interesting. First of all, it rained. It was like normal rain for most of the afternoon, but by the time Reunion let out, it was like the second Flood. But that was fun! I'm the only idiot I know who likes the rain, but man, do I like the rain. I like the sound it makes as it hits the trees and the sidewalks, and I like feeling the cold droplets on my face. And the air just seems so much fresher, so I take deep breaths just cause I can.
Reunion itself was fun. Beforehand was craziness. Now Lou is usually punchy (this is Lou we're talking about. She's always punchy), but Matt Callis was just going nuts today. Mainly harassing the microphone. I blame the Sprite. Those bubbles'll get you, man. We also discussed what flavor of Starburst is better (pink, duh) and if Callis has magic spit. Jim (the drummer) was not here, but this guy named Joel filled in for him on that drum with the weird name and did a very nice job. He's from CIU, and I thought that was rather interesting. I've always wanted to meet someone from there. Ah, yes! And Allison let me borrow her Aaron Keyes Band CD. Love you, Allison! Poddy is quite pleased.
Something weird happened today also. I was wandering the halls as I do between sound check and Reunion, when this lady comes up to me. Apparently she heard me sing during sound check and wanted to give me some words of encouragement, as she is also a singer. I was thankful for that much, because I wasn't on my best game musically today and was losing focus again, so that was a bit of a jolt back to reality. What's weird is she asked me if I knew this song called "On My Knees". I did; in fact, it's one of my favorite songs. Next thing I know, she's talking to Callis. I'm not listening because the sound system was messing up and that had gotten my attention. I asked Callis what she said a bit later, and it turns out that she told him that God had told her that I'm supposed to sing this song at Reunion. OK, 1. If you've ever heard "On My Knees", you know it's not exactly canon Reunion genre, and 2. I'm not even getting into denominational things, but people can get really iffy about people giving them direct directions from God. Callis was nice about it, but when I heard about it, I was really embarrassed. I know what my dad would say (charismatic preacher daddy, not heavenly daddy): not to blow it off but ask God about it myself and see what He says. Of course, this sort of thing is common in my home church, so he may be a little biased, but I think I'll give it a try. I'll do it in a few days, though, because I don't trust my emotions right now. They're very conflicting on the matter.
But Reunion was good. I really liked the songs we sang this week, as I did the week before. My favorite musically was Shivering Door, and my favorite lyrically was All That I Can Say. J.P. spoke today, as Garrett is in Hilton Head. I always like to hear him speak, because he has this wonderfully droll sense of humor. I think the main point was about money, but what really spoke to me was what he had to say about worrying in general. Heaven knows I'm the queen of worrying. I like to say my biggest inner paradox is that I don't expect perfection from anyone but myself, so I find myself nitpicking at stuff in my life and have to make myself stop. He quoted a Bible passage I've heard a million times, but it's like I'm always hearing it for the first time. It's Matthew 6:25-34, which is obviously too long for me to post here, but you should definitely read it over for yourself. My favorite verse from that passage is the very last one (34): "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today."
Amen to that, brother. Amen to that. I'm always wanting more or pushing myself farther, and that puts such a strain on you after a while. When I do sit down and remind myself that I have pretty much everything I need and a lot of the things I want (like Poddy), I find that it's easy to be content. I'd rather be thankful for what I do have than restless for the things I don't.
As I was walking back to my dorm, feeling the rain drip on my face and taking deep breaths, I thought about how much fun I'd had today and how rewarding it was to have been able to worship my God and learn more about Him with people I really care about. And all I could think was, "Life is beautiful."

Whoring Myself Out (And no, it's not what you think)
Matt Baker wrote an interesting post (click here to read it) yesterday about how he whores himself out to make money. I told you to get your mind out of the gutter, didn't I? What I mean by this is that at work, Baker often has to smile and act like everything's fine when he feels like crap so he can get good tips. And keep his job. Matt Jones termed this "whoring yourself out".
If that's the case, then I'm the queen of whores. And I did a particularly bang-up job today.
....Okay, that just sounds wrong, so let's shelve the whole whore analogy for a minute. Today I felt like crap. It was mostly due to the fact that I didn't do so well on my Astronomy test, which is dumb because I only made a C and it's not like my class grade and subsequently my GPA is screwed. I just studied really hard for it, but I got to the mathematical questions and I was like, "What the crap is this?!!!" I mean, I already feel like an idiot in that class...
Sigh.
Today was also one of those days I have occasionally when I go completely rocker chick and wear black and have Linkin Park blaring through my iPod all day, so compound this with the crappy grade and you see my state of mind. Unfortunately, instead of being able to shut myself in my room like I usually do when I'm like this, I had band practice today. I have to admit, eating poser Oreos (reduced fat Oreos are just mean) and discussing whether or not I have a telepathic connection with Poddy, which apparently sounds like "potty" and I never noticed, was fun enough. But I still felt off, and I felt really guilty about it because everyone was being so nice. So I whored myself out. I pushed my own feelings aside for the moment and reminded myself that I'm not the only person in the world and grinned and laughed like everything was fine. But it is so wrong how life is sometimes. Matt Callis was talking about all this stuff he has to get done (I can't believe I've named three Matts in this post), and he looked pretty tired, so I really felt like crap, realizing how busy he is. Four blogs I've read today are particularly uplifting. Then I got tested to see if I'm a match for this girl who has leukemia...so I feel pretty much like a bitch, whining about one stupid grade, when I have so much to be thankful for and so many people aren't as well off as I am. I'm trying really hard to will myself to be happy and try not to cry, and I feel so stupid. I don't have any right to be sad or angry about anything. I'm so blessed, and I still find things to complain about. I don't know what my problem is. The least I can do is smile for people and not have them have to worry about me. If someone can see my smile and feel at ease for that one moment, isn't that accomplishing something?

Myself in Other Terms..and maybe I should change my wallpaper...
I happen to be taking Intro to Afro-American Studies during Black History Month, so that's interesting. The funny thing is I was dead set against taking this class, but this was the only class that would fit in my schedule and fill my business requirement. Now, why would a girl with a "very nice tan" be against taking a class like this? It's a long, drawn out sob story about how I've had black history drilled into my head since like 4th grade and it often feels forced being around people of my own race, so I'm not getting into it. But I digress.
It turns out that I like the class, actually. I find myself thinking in terms of my race, which I almost never do. Frankly, I rarely think about race, because I just don't think it's that important. I mean, I see it like I see eye color. Your eyes might be green and mine are brown, but we're both still human. It's not that I'm ashamed to be black at all. I'm really proud of what my ancestors accomplished despite their hardships, and I'm actually learning stuff I didn't know before in class. It's fascinating. I guess I just take it for granted a lot. That, and I simply don't hang around that many black people anymore. Which is a huge culture shock for me, coming from predominately black schools for most of my school career. But then, it's not. I never really embraced the whole black subculture thing completely. It's just not who I am. I laugh about it now, because I was always the misfit who knew all the rock songs and none of the rap ones...
Completely off the subject: I have this new wallpaper on my desktop, and it's...not like me at all. I mean, it really doesn't go with my pink and burgundy windows and taskbar. That, and looking at psycho-Kenshin is kinda disturbing...anyway, you take a look:

It turns out that I like the class, actually. I find myself thinking in terms of my race, which I almost never do. Frankly, I rarely think about race, because I just don't think it's that important. I mean, I see it like I see eye color. Your eyes might be green and mine are brown, but we're both still human. It's not that I'm ashamed to be black at all. I'm really proud of what my ancestors accomplished despite their hardships, and I'm actually learning stuff I didn't know before in class. It's fascinating. I guess I just take it for granted a lot. Obsessions
I will devote an entry to each of these later (like when I don't have anything to write), but these are my obsessions....
the color pink
lip gloss ( I have at least 20 different varieties)
stringed instruments (though i can't play any)
chicken (don't ask)
music in general
anime
my iPod (streamlined musicality. very velveteen.)
that Amp energy drink (thank goodness they come in those little tiny cans, or I'd be in trouble...)
and last, but not least, God. Nope, I'm not kidding. He is what probably permeates my thoughts the most. I think it's safe to say I'm obsessed. But that's actually a good thing. Unlike lacing my soda with Amp and looking like a drunk...

The Basics...
Welcome to the very first post of my very first blog. Now, don't leave yet. I know your pointer was hovering over that back button, but humor me. The obligatory first blog must include who I am and why I'm writing this, yes? So...my name is Liza- perpetual dreamer and queen of procrastination, among other things.
And I'm writing this mostly for the benefit of my friends who also have blogs. This is an awesome way to get to know each other better, I think. This blog will consist of my rambling and things I find interesting. If you don't like it, I don't really care. I am who I am, and trying to change myself is rather silly. But if some of you find this blog interesting, then yay! We should be friends...
Finally, why the heck is this thing called Velveteen Equations? Have you ever heard of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex? If not, it's okay. I'm one of those weird people who like anime...Anyway. The soundtrack to said anime is awesome, with most of the songs being composed by Yoko Kanno. who is a musical genius and comes up with this crazy-eclectic music. One of my favorite songs on it is called Velveteen, which is in Italian and English and sung by an Italian singer. (But it was composed by a Japanese musician. That's weird, isn't it?) Anyway, here's part of the song:
Tu sei per me...iaria che respiro
il mio cibo, cioche osservo
magico sei tu! e sento che
Sono inamorata di emozioni
smisurate e infinite ormai!
vivi, nei miei pensieri.
a velveteen equation

You are for me... the air that I breathe
My food, the eyes I see with
You're the magic! And I feel
Than I'm in love
Immeasurably and almost intinitely
Live, in my thoughts
a velveteen equation

You're the magic! And I feel
Than I'm in love
Immeasurably and almost intinitely
Live, in my thoughts
a velveteen equation
My belief is if you look hard enough, there are many moments in life that are beautiful in their simply pure poetry- velveteen equations, if you will. Thus, the blog was born. If you've read this far, thank you very much. I hope you'll come again. Until next time...
